The One Book Meme

I've been "tagged" for this meme by my friend Anette at Liquidoxology. I've never been officially "tagged" before (not counting the generic "consider yourself tagged if you're reading this") and my life must be lacking in thrills, because it made my day!!

For my non-blogging readership, "meme" is French for "same," if I remember rightly (I did take French many moons ago), and it's just a list of the same questions that everyone fills in with their own answers.

So here it is--the One Book Meme!

1. One book that changed your life:

Restoring the Christian Soul by Leanne Payne

2. One book that you’ve read more than once:

The Pace of a Hen by Josephine Moffett Benton

3. One book you’d want on a desert island:

A parallel Bible with study notes, the Apocrypha, a concordance--the works

4. One book that made you laugh:

Raising Demons by Shirley Jackson

5. One book that made you cry:

Yonder by Tony Johnston (a picture book that gets me every time)

6. One book that you wish had been written:

How to Raise Six Children, Homeschool, Care for a House and a Husband, and Have Time Left Over for Blogging and All the Other Stuff You’d Really Like to Do

7. One book that you wish had never been written:

The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan

8. One book you’re currently reading:

The Chosen by Chaim Potok

9. One book you’ve been meaning to read:

For the Life of the World by Alexander Schmemann

Now I'm tagging (if they haven't done this one already) Diane, Tonia, Islandsparrow, and Jen

...and any else who's willing to play along--you don't have to have a blog to do so! Just copy and paste this post into the comments box, delete my answers and fill in your own. (If you don't have a Blogger account, sign in as Anonymous and identify yourself at the end of your comment.) I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks for the tag...I guess I have to get back to blogging now!

One question...why did you choose The Feminine Mystique as the book you wish had never been written? I've heard it referenced zillions of times, but have never read it.

Like your meme. I am going to go look for "At a hens pace". I did a similiar meme at my blog if you get a chance.

Jen R--Yes, I've been wondering when you were going to return!

I added a link to an article about Betty and her famous book. It's so interesting--The Pace of a Hen was written about the same time, actually two years before, and it addresses some of the same issues Friedan did, especially the lack of intellectual fulfillment in the housewifely role of that time.

Friedan's book was just so destructive of women being able to find any fulfillment while in that role. A correction was needed, but she threw out the baby with the bathwater, to the detriment of several generations.

Many of my generation, like me, are working hard to reclaim the territory--the respect, the dignity, the fulfillment of being a mother and homemaker--that was lost in the 60's.

(Friedan was also credited for being this great champion of women, but she really ignored the plight of many lower-class women; her "research" all focused on her classmates from Smith College--an Ivy League school, I believe. She wasn't all bad, of course, but...I had to choose a book!)

Ah, yes, all of that makes sense. I'd love to see a review of The Pace of a Hen on your blog :-)

Blogging has taken a back seat for a while since anything that's really interesting in my life to write about is stuff I wouldnt put online at this point. Lots to process from my time in Chicago.
