Works for Me--'Tis the Season

Since we just got several inches of snow tonight, I thought I'd share this tip for keeping snow out of your kids' boots--or your own!

Hat tip to my mom, who taught me this: Save your old knee high pantyhose and pull them over your little kids' boots and up to the knee of their snowsuit, or as far as they'll go. They'll stay because the elastic band at the top will hold them--this doesn't work so well if you try to cut off the bottoms of regular pantyhose, though I have tried pinning them.

And if you find yourself without boots because your teenage daughter has borrowed yours--or whatever YOUR excuse may be!--you can pull knee-highs over your Reeboks and up to the calves of your jeans and go out into a couple feet of snow to clean off your car...and when you go back inside and remove your snow-covered nylons, your jeans and shoes will be DRY. Believe me! I have tried this.

This year, I don't have any old knee-highs. It has been years since I wore them, and I think in the move, I finally tossed the group of worse-for-the wear hole-y ones we had been using for years for "snow hose." So my two youngest have gone without, the last two times they've played in the snow, and both times they have come in with snow down around their ankles.

So I am adding cheap knee-highs to my Dollar General list! Because once you FINALLY get them all snow-suited and mittened and scarved and booted and zipped...you want them to stay out there awhile, right?

BRILLIANT! Thanks! Maybe I can get away with not wearing boots in to work in the morning for just two inches of snow...

And it really works? Whoda thunk it? Awesome idea! Down here in Texas, I'd only need one pair/year/kid. heh.

Now I just need a really great way to keep their hands from getting FROZEN, no matter what mittens or gloves I put on 'em. What do yours wear?

Another idea is to wrap saran wrap (cling film) around where the boots meet the trousers. My friend who used to work with horses told me of this solution!
