New Session, New Roles

It’s a new session of drama, dance and singing classes at our theater group!

We have three weeks of classes in December, plus auditions for this session’s production, Aladdin.  We might have four kids in one show, for the first time ever! Bantam13 and Chicklet are auditioning, as usual. Bantam17 is very choosy about which shows he decides to do these days—too busy with school, a job, and his music—but he’s decided to do this one. And since B7 will be B8 before the show starts, he’s finally old enough to audition. So if he gets in, that will put four of our kids onstage at once—a first!

And Mama makes five! No, not on stage. I’m too old to audition, by just a few years. But, after getting my feet wet as a teacher, I’ve been invited to be the intern director for this show, and I couldn’t be more excited!

I don’t even know what else to say about it. I’m that excited.

I am going to learn a ton and have So. Much. Fun. I love the kids already, I love the other directors I'll be working with, I love what I’ll be doing on the team…I can’t wait!

But wait, I must, because rehearsals don’t start till January. Auditions are in a little over a week, though, and my kids are ready. They have good audition pieces picked out and they are already well-rehearsed. I’m proud of them!

As an intern, I won’t have a say in the final casting decisions, though I will get to be part of the process, unless my own kids are being discussed. Then I get to leave the room, and I am glad. It’s the one awkward part for me. I would enjoy directing even if my own kids weren’t in the show, but the truth is, I probably couldn’t justify the time away from my family if none of them were in it, sooo…this is good!

In the meantime, I am teaching Scenes and Monologues every week in our class program. Last time I taught this class, I had seven girls. Last night, I had five girls and two boys, which opens up new possibilities! B13 is taking Improv this session, which he always enjoys. Chicklet and B7 are in a Ballet/Lyrical class for 8-12 year olds, and the aide for their class is none other than their big brother, B17. There are several little boys in the class, and it's good for them to see a big teenage guy at the barre too! He's really enjoying it.

So the session is off to a good start....  Magic Carpet, here we come! It's going to be a great ride!
